However since Q from 007 isn’t at your disposable nor are spy satellites and an army of agents you must look to the more practical day to day items to assist you. Incognito is the name of the game here so your tools and resources have to be everyday items that won’t arouse suspicion.

* SmartPhone: If you don’t have a cell phone with functionality that goes beyond making and receiving calls it’s certainly time to consider an upgrade. There are so many options on the market these days that will not break the bank.

The two most popular options are Apple’s iPhone and RIM’s Blackberry.   Your cell phone is one of if not the biggest asset to maintaining your secret life. It is also the most common way of getting caught so safe guard it with your life.

Make sure to choose a device that will easily allow you to modify/delete call logs, text messages, emails, etc.   Better still are phones that will support a password, encryption, and have 3rd party applications you can load onto them that’ll help you conceal secret messages and contacts.

Personally what we recommend is a Blackberry, with full encryption, and an app called “Blackbook” by mblware. This app hides away all your questionable contacts as well as any interaction with them be that calls, texts, emails, pictures, etc.

It’s accessible via a secret key combination. The encryption is also a very important piece in case your phone ends up in the wrong hands; its contents will not be accessible.

* Second Phone/Line: Another option is to go out and get a secondary phone altogether and maintain your hidden activity there. There are several pre-paid and pay as you go options available these days from all the major providers. Also it’s easily trashed at the first sign of trouble.

While this is an option it’s not one I highly recommend.   Having to explain a second physical device and phone number will raise all sorts of suspicions.

* Google Voice: Google now has so many options to assist your nefarious lifestyle it’s made us by stock!! Google voice is an excellent way to get around the second phone issue above. Using your existing cell phone, get yourself a Google voice account.

This will give you a second phone number right on your existing cell phone!! Using Google Voice you get a new additional phone number on your existing device, free text messaging on it, block unwanted callers, record calls, conference calls, and even screen callers so you can hear who is calling before you pick up. Obviously the “cover” worthy applications to this are limitless.

You can even select the area code you want this number in. So if you’re in area code 323 in LA get yourself a 212 NY area code. Having another City as your cover makes it much easier to keep anyone from your hidden / double life at bay during “legit” times. You can’t go away for the weekend with your side dish or hit that new club on Saturday night if you’re out of town ; )

* Flying? Driving? Train? Method of travel will have an impact on the way cover is laid out. For our purposes here we’ll use Flying since it is the most difficult to fake properly but also provides they greatest amount of cover.

* Adding legitimacy is key. At all cost try to avoid “Phantom Flights”. Phantom flights don’t exist and should only be used in an emergency. If they are checked on you’ll be screwed.

Always search and make sure you’re on a “real” flight with real flight information such as flight number, gate numbers, arrival / departure times, airline codes, seat numbers, upgrades, baggage claim, etc.

* Have an itinerary and make it available: Most of the major airline carriers as well as travel sites will allow you to put together a trip and save the itinerary without making a purchase.

Or they’ll allow you to place an itinerary on “HOLD” for usually up to 24hrs also without having to purchase it.

This is usually good enough as a print out for the sake of cover. Leave it lying about or just send it to whoever you’re deceiving.   It adds a layer of legitimacy to your cover.    You won’t need physical tickets as proof since you’ll be getting your E-ticket at the airport. Add mock Hotel & Rental Car reservations to the itinerary as well.

* A step further is if you’ve ever printed any legit E-ticket online you can, if you were so inclined, save that PDF or image and then doctor it later to suite a future “outdoors” flight.

BY NO means attempt to cross any airport security zones and board an actual plane with a fake/doctored boarding pass. If so you will find yourself detained, arrested,   and possibly sent to a terrorist camp.

For the novelty of deceiving your friends, spouse, employer, etc as to your intended whereabouts it’ll do just fine.

* Getting to the airport: Preferred methods are driving yourself there or being dropped off. If you drive yourself there then leave your car in airport parking. The overnight time stamped & dated receipt does wonders for your cover.

Getting dropped off by a corroborative party also adds value to your cover. Last choice, if you must then take a cab there.

* While at the Airport: If you need to dip into your legitimate cash for a little extra funding, this is the time to do it.   Your statement will show a cash withdrawal from an ATM within the airport on the time & date of your flight.

Further legitimizing your whereabouts and can be explained as pocket money for the trip. Also it’s a great time to make some “pre-flight” calls.   Walking through the airport with the noise of the people, the overhead announcements, it all adds layers of legitimacy to your cover.

While on the phone stop and ask an employee which way to “gate whatever”? All part of the cover.

* Alternate Email/Chatting Account: If you don’t have one already I strongly suggest an alternate email account.   There are several options available so I won’t go into too much detail here.

The key is to keep your legitimate interactions separate from your hidden ones.   Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo mail take your pick. All have chat functionality as well. If the heat comes you can just abandon them without any ties to your private life.

If at all possible always keep real specifics like your name, place of work, personal details that can tie back to you out of these interactions. It’s not enough to protect your end, you never know what the person on the other end is storing that can expose you.

* Watch your would be Watchers:   There are several methods to employ here but the main one is GPS tracking. Yup….have a satellite track their every move.    You’d be surprised how many options there are in this realm today. Getting a tracking unit for your partner’s vehicle has never been easier. Nor has the simplified installation.

There are “dead drop” models that you plant in the car and retrieve later to review where they’ve been. This isn’t what you want. You need real time intel so if they’re on the way to where you aren’t suppose to be you know to get out! Geofences are your friends.

Any good GPS tracking solution will offer this. Basically a Geofence is a predetermined perimeter set by you so if the subject in question enters or exits a certain area you can be notified via text message and or email.

How else are you supposed to enjoy a Hotel rendezvous or kick back at the bar if you’re incessantly checking your phone to see where they are.    This way you can relax your guard a bit and spring into action if necessary after you see questionable movement.

A trusted source for gadgetry such as this is Brick house Security. An alternative method of GPS tracking is now available via their cell phone.   Many of the major cell phone providers offer this nowadays.   Check with yours and determine their offerings.

I know AT&T and Sprint offer this service. I said alternative but if you can do both. There’s nothing like redundancy. What if they’re in a different car… Lastly there’s Flexispy.

This wonderful little app will not only let you track their location via their cellphone…. It’ll also let’s you read their texts, emails, and listen in on their calls. No such thing as too much intel.

* SpoofCard:   Spoofcard is a wonderful little product that allows you to manipulate Caller ID information.   This is immensely useful to establish your “whereabouts”.   Say you’re at the bar and you need to check in where your suppose to be (the office).

Simply use the Spoof service to call your partner. Their phone will show your office number. Even before they answer the call you’ve already established your whereabouts.

Also very use if you’re supposed to be “out of town”.   Call from the area code you’re supposed to be in. It has other great features like voice changing and call recording although as a cover aid those aren’t recommended.   There is no physical card unless you request one.

This keeps the service hidden from view.   Lastly there is a “Spoof App” available for both the Blackberry & the iPhone. Making it even easier to use.

* The free Sound Project: This wonderful site has sounds. Background sounds.   So for instance if while on your Spoof call you’re suppose to be in the office, a meeting, a dinner, a conference call, a plane, the airport, etc you can easily supply the soundtrack for that.

This gives that special added touch of realism to your cover.   Suggested use is to download and store the ones you’ll need to your iPod or a CD for handy playback .

If putting them on a CD, sandwich them in between 20-30 legitimate tracks. An audiobook is the best choice as it normally has several tracks and the sound files will hide nicely within. Make sure the topic is as boring as possible. This way should your CD be discovered it can easily be disregarded as an audio book..

* Fake Receipts: Many sites and even iPhone apps exist that allow you to do this today. Should you find that you need to reproduce a credit card statement or receipt a simple Google search will point you in the right direction.

* P.O. Box: If need be go and get yourself a P.O. Box. This is a handy tool for receiving snail mail (If there’s no other electronic method).

I find it is also useful for receiving items you’ve ordered online that simply could not & should not be explained if they were to arrive at your home address.   Many places offer keyed 24/7 access to your box.
